Where It All Started
Hey there, Liam Sanders here, coming to you from the mountain town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. If you’ve ever passed through, you know this place runs on handmade charm – local crafts, art fairs, music on the corners, and festivals that make the whole town come alive.
When I was a teenager, you’d often find me on a street corner with a guitar in hand, my buddy James and my now wife Sarah by my side. Our gigs weren’t about chasing fame or trying to make it big. They were about connection, the kind you only get when you’re playing your heart out in front of strangers who suddenly feel like friends.
I was deep into artists like Manu Chao, Goran Bregovic, and the old soul of Balkan brass. Around that time, I was also going to as many live concerts as I could. I was mostly drawn to underground folk sessions, world music nights, and outdoor music circles tucked behind old bookstores and coffeehouses. It was raw and real, and it shaped the way I see music to this day.
And crafts? Now that’s a story of its own. Sarah had this magic way of turning scraps into beauty. Curtains, table runners, and little handmade pieces that made our home feel like ours. Over time, I started helping out and learnt to see the rhythm in working with your hands, just like with music.
After college, I took a teaching job down in Tulsa. The city had its pace, and I respect that, but I’ve always been more of a small-town soul. So after a few years, some savings, and a clearer head, I came back home to Eureka Springs.
And that brings me to this blog – The Music Beats. That was Sarah’s idea. One night, she looked at me and said, “You’ve lived it. Why not write it?” So here we are. This space is a tribute to small-town rhythms, creative sparks, and the beauty of doing what you love.
I’m not here to sell you a lifestyle. I’m just sharing the one I’ve got. So pull up a chair, and thanks for being here. I hope The Music Beats finds its rhythm in your life, too.
These days, I teach full-time at the local school. It’s a good life, honestly. But the music never left. Sarah and I still play now and then. Not for the crowd, but for the feeling.
